Why OSX is better, reason one

by Hadley Stern Dec 16, 2002

OS 9 Trash canIt doesn’t crash. This is probably the biggest item in favor of OS X. Back in the 9 days I can remember showing how great my mac was to windows users and crossing my fingers that it wouldn’t crash. Or, when ripping a complicated pdf from quark today crossing my fingers that quark wouldn’t crash bringing the whole machine down. Compare that to today knowing that Indesign in OS X will be fine and that if it does crash only it will crash. Of course, once quark gets their act together on releasing an OS X version I will be happy to use it in OS X.  In my over a year of using OS X my machine has never ever crashed on me. I once had a kernel panic upon install on one machine; an errant pci scsi card was responsible. In day-to-day work it is a relief to not have to worry when I open that big file or application, “will my machine crash?” And yes, if you setup OS 9 with great care, knowing the ins and outs of every extension (remember conflict catcher) and you never buy any new software or hardware or update anything, OS 9 is pretty stable. With OS X I don’t have to worry if that new scanner software (not extension, there are no extensions in OS X) will conflict with my email browser. With OS X it won’t.

  • You’ve had better luck than I. I experience an OS X “crash” every few months. & ; ^ )

Let me see if I can guess the next 10 reasons why OS X is better to complete the Top 10.

    3. Column View. This superior way of looking at, organizing and managing drives, folders and files is the NeXt best thing to sliced bread.
    4. Multitasking. Whatever you’re doing in one application can be left to itself while you do something else in others and so on without interfering nor slowing down any of them.
    5. Classic Mode. Most OS 9 programs run faster in Classic than natively. When a 9 applicaction crashes, it doesn’t take down the entire system with it.
    6. The Digital Hub. OS X comes with a suite of applications that are way better than their OS 9 counterparts and some that don’t exist in the OS 9 world at all.
    7. Multiprocessor aware. OS X takes advantage of an many processors as you have to run it in.
    8. OS X auto-configures your network and internet connection.
    9. OS X audio and music standards are far superior to the previous audio and music scheme.
    10. OS X looks great! Aqua is very cool for the eyes to live with.
    11. OS X is Fun to be in!
    12. OS X feels fast enough, even on so called “slow” and “unsupported” Macs.

  • Great, I’ve never heard of any operating system that is so stable that it never crashes. My experience shows that indeed there has never been anything like it.
